L4L visited two schools with a view to making either or both our next project/s.

Atwima Manyia Junior High School

It is a large site with a Primary School as well as a Junior High consisting of approximately one thousand, two hundred pupils in total and fifty-five teachers.

There are currently no toilet facilities on site and there is no running water. Most children use the surrounding scrubland when they need to use ‘the toilet’.

A borehole has been dug and there is a septic tank on site. As there is no running water in the schools, the immediate need will be to install water tanks in both schools, using the water from the bore hole.

Lots of work has been done by the PTA to support this project.

St Joseph Roman Catholic Primary

L4L is considering supporting the Kindergarten in this school as they have their own toilet block next to the Primary/Junior High School block. However, the water tank is broken and therefore there is no water in the toilets and they are not flushable. The hand basins are out of use as they are full of plaster dust. There is also a single teacher toilet which is not used for the same reason. Consequently, the children urinate in the playground and the teachers squat in an area between the classrooms and the boundary wall.
